Frequently Asked Questions

How old should a puppy be before getting adopted?
We say that they should be eight weeks old.

Are French bulldogs able to swim?
NO! NO! NO!  Leaving your dog near water of any kind will very likely result in its death. They sink like lead weights. Your dog will drown in a matter of seconds if it falls into water deeper than it is tall. It is, however, possible to teach them to swim while wearing specially designed life jackets. Even so, you can never leave them alone to paddle about. Because Frenchies overheat so easily, they will go to water even though it always leads to their deaths. Constant vigilance is absolutely necessary.

What about living in the city?
Frenchies love the indoors. As lapdogs, they’re much more comfy snuggling that hitting the bricks for a 3-mile jog. They really do very well in urban settings because they require neither a large home nor acres of space to frolic in the way other breeds would. A daily walk suffices for their exercise. We like to let them play in the backyard or with the kids, which is just what they need.

Are they loud?
No, they usually only bark when alarmed or frightened.

They’re territorial. What if an owner has a cat too?
If Frenchies get proper socialization training and are brought up with cats, like our case as we have cats too, then they’re OK with them. It’s essential to introduce Frenchies to other animals as young as possible.

Is it a good idea to spay or neuter my dog?
It is necessary! It will help to shield your dog from various cancers.

Are Frenchies aggressive?
In short, no, they are not. If an unscrupulous breeder trains them to be that way, then they will be. We, however, never do that. There is a possibility, despite socialization, that they will be aggressive with other dogs on rare occasions.

Is there a difference between French bulldogs and Boston terriers?
They are very similar; they are distinctly different. Physically, especially when it comes to color, they are quite different. They also have different temperaments. The Boston terrier has much more energy and might wear out its owner while playing fetch rather than the other way around. Boston terriers won’t be good couch potatoes the way French bulldogs will. In fact, owners of older Frenchies will have to take steps to ensure their dogs get the right amount of exercise to remain healthy.

What about fleas?
All dogs can get fleas. The most common way for this to happen is to interact with other dogs that have fleas. This can happen at dog runs, during “doggy play dates,” or other locations where different dogs mingle. Also, dogs who play in wet leaves, grass, or underbrush are more at risk to pick up fleas than dogs who play in open fields or alone in closed runs.

Are Frenchies anxious at all?
Yes, they suffer from separation anxiety. Crate training is a great way to alleviate that anxiety. Also, making sure they have adequate toys, particularly chew toys, will help them with this problem.

How to train a French bulldog?
The breed is quite intelligent, which makes Frenchies easy to train. Conversely, their stubborn streak makes it difficult in certain ways. Early training is crucial. The best way to keep their attention is to make their training into a game. It’s sort of the “hide the medicine in a treat” trick when it comes to training. They want to be part of your lives, so make the training part of their lives. That will work out best for both you and your dog.

What about Frenchies and kids?
They must be socialized and well-trained. Also, you must teach your children how to act with a French bulldog. Frenchies are people pleasers to a fault, but teasing and tormenting a French bulldog is damaging to its psyche.
We train our Frenchies to interact with children from the very beginning. Necessarily, we teach our children from a young age, too, how to behave around dogs and how to treat them. It’s never a good idea to tease a dog.

How big are they?
They weigh up to 28 pounds, and they’re usually a foot or so tall.
